Review of “Argylle”: a fun 200 million dollar parody… and too long

Matthew Vaughn completely takes on the business side of this parody of a spy blockbuster starring Henry Cavill, Dua Lipa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell… and Claudia Schiffer’s cat.

Let’s say it once and for all, Alfie, the Scottish Fold with the characteristic folded ears who accompanies Bryce Dallas Howard’s character during his incredible adventures, is the cat of former model Claudia Schiffer, married since 2002 to director Matthew Vaughn, and who, From time to time, he is replaced by a computer-generated double to avoid parody stunts.

Parodic is the word that comes to mind after 139 minutes offor argya blockbuster with an unofficial budget of 200 million dollars, a cast on steroids, impressive and fun action scenes and a script by Jason Fuchs, so convoluted that we quickly mock its coherence or credibility… All of this unfortunately confirming that Matthew Vaughn does not find, this time, the excellence of Kick ass.

No problem. Like in the franchise. king manthe filmmaker has fun, impresses, parodies the James Bond, Mission Impossible and other action films whose merit is to make us forget the cold and grayness of winter, for argy achieving the feat of being able to pass for a Valentine’s or Christmas movie since it is full of good feelings and humorous sentimentality.

The first scene features secret agent Argylle (Henry Cavill) and villainess LaGrange (Dua Lipa) first participating in a dance number, then a motorcycle chase through the alleys and rooftops of a sunny Greek village, in obvious reference to James Bond .

But neither Argylle nor LaGrange are real. The characters arise from the imagination of Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard, whom Matthew Vaughn manages to make very likeable), writer of successful spy novels, in obvious reference to Chasing the green diamond (1984). It is she who will soon find herself in serious trouble, as she finds herself in the crosshairs of a terrorist organization, the Division, and agent Aidan (Sam Rockwell) will arrive to protect her.

We also find John Cena as Argylle’s partner, Sofia Boutella as a mysterious spy, Catherine O’Hara and Bryan Cranston as Elly’s parents, as well as Samuel L. Jackson as a former CIA director.

Bryce Dallas Howard in the movie Argylle

Sometimes Mathew Vaughn is particularly inspired, as in this scene where Elly and Aidan fight in the middle of multicolored smoke to the rhythm of the song. Electric power (by Ariana DeBose, Boy George and Nile Rodgers) or in various other moments in which the filmmaker has fun juxtaposing the same action scene with different characters.

This does not avoid a certain heaviness, for argy endless. Furthermore, as the film has been produced by Apple Original Films, the product placement (computers, songs, including the posthumous film From time to time of the Beatles, etc.) from the apple company ends up being a bit indigestible. And yes, sometimes and even often, we perceive the deeply commercial side of the production, where everything is designed based on revenue and not cinematographic value. But the main thing is thatfor argy entertains without problems.
