“Our children are brothers and sisters”: Support for Depardieu: Swiss actor Vincent Pérez is justified

By signing the highly controversial platform in support of Gérard Depardieu, accused of rape, Vincent Perez had caused unrest. On Wednesday, the Swiss actor decided to break the silence by admitting to having adopted a position that was closest to the family. In fact, the actor is Roxane Depardieu’s father-in-law.

In December, Vincent Pérez, along with 50 other personalities from the world of culture, co-signed the column published on the Figaro website denouncing a “lynching” of Gérard Depardieu. Accused of rape since 2020, the actor is at the center of a scandal after a documentary in which he is heard sexualizing a girl on horseback.

“Gérard Depardieu is probably the best actor. The last sacred monster of cinema. We can no longer remain silent in the face of the lynching that fell upon him, in the face of the torrent of hatred that is poured out on his person, without nuances, in the most complete amalgam and challenging a presumption of innocence from which he would have benefited, like everyone else, if he were not the giant of cinema that he is,” they wrote in this text.

The forum provoked strong reactions. More than 2,500 artists, including Angèle, Louane and Médine, then signed a “countertribuna” in response to the support of the actor Gérard Depardieu.

“We are in a family relationship”

On Instagram, Vincent Perez decided to break the silence by sharing a message through the account of the festival he founded, Les Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne.

“I was co-author of a column in December with the objective of protecting the very principle of presumption of innocence and in no case against the rights of women,” the statement explains.

“As for Gérard Depardieu, our children are brothers and sisters, we raised a daughter together for 28 years, we have a family relationship. If a member of your family is attacked, he should be able to count on the support of his family,” he continues. The Swiss actor is in fact Roxane Depardieu’s father-in-law.

But that does not prevent him from distancing himself: “In everything that is said about him, I do not recognize the man I have known for 35 years.”

“My respect for women and the notion of consent are important issues for me. “Both are at the heart of two films I have made,” she assures.

And to conclude: “I am deeply moved by the testimonies of those who have been or have felt harassed, both in the world of cinema and elsewhere. “Anything that violates human dignity disgusts me.”

In the same publication, the festival distances itself from the words of its founder. “As a cultural entity, the Rencontres 7e Art Lausanne are not signatories of any forum and act in the general interest, the primary vocation of the association.”

“Too late,” says one woman in response to the post. “Supporting a member of your environment in private is not the same as proclaiming your innocence in public, while disregarding the words of the victims… Regardless of the intention, the actions are there and are incompatible with the values established in this message,” comments another Internet user.

Will Vicente Pérez’s career emerge from the controversy unscathed? Pierre Richard, also a signatory of the platform and who has since apologized, had his title of ambassador of the child protection association withdrawn.
