Justin Barron would have been traded to the Flyers if Claude Giroux had been sent to Colorado

The Canadian received Justin Barron two years ago from the Avalanche. Barron and a second pick in 2024 headed to Montreal in exchange for the services of Artturi Lehkonen.

It was also, in Joe Sakic’s eyes, an expensive price… even if Lehky was important during the 2022 playoffs. #StanleyCup

We may wonder if Barron will become the defender we expect in Montreal, but the fact is that at the time Justin Barron’s name was in demand. After all, he couldn’t find his place in the city and Avalanche leaders identified him as a trade prospect.

Will time prove them right in pointing to this hope to send it to other heavens?

All this to say that Montreal isn’t the only club that Barron was offered to. The Flyers, according to reports Elliotte Friedman (on her 32 Thoughts podcast)He would have gotten the defenseman if Claude Giroux had gone to Denver in 2022.

Let us remember that in 2022, on the verge of autonomy, Giroux was traded by the Flyers. He had the option to choose his destiny and, at one point, Avalanche seemed to be next for him.

He was eventually traded to the Panthers on March 19 along with German Rubstov, Connor Bunnaman and a 2024 fifth pick for Owen Tippett, a 2023 third pick and a 2024 conditional first pick.

The date of March 19 is important. Because? Because two days later, on March 21, 2022, Lehkonen was traded to Denver.

If we read between the lines, we might think that Denver’s number one pick was Giroux (logically) and not Lehkonen. But still, Sakic called Kent Hughes every day for 17 days to look for Lehky.

The former Avalanche general manager has visibly remained in the mix for Lehkonen, who wasn’t on the market, and when he saw that Barron wasn’t going to be able to get Giroux, he presumably offered him a lower deal for Lehkonen.

One wonders if Artturi Lehkonen would have been traded if Claude Giroux had gone to Denver. We also wonder if Colorado would have won the Stanley Cup with Giroux instead of Lehkonen.

So from the moment Barron was no longer in the game for the Flyers, the right defenseman, whose offensive potential is interesting, became a real possibility in Montreal. Obviously, Hughes has to worry about Barron, who played his last games in Laval.

We know that the Canadian management is betting on young people and we suspect that Justin Barron’s success must be important in their eyes. But a rumor like this reminds us a little more, right?

A lot

– Jake Guentzel: to change him, a Claude Giroux price would be needed in 2022, precisely.

– Would it be three or four down football?

– Oh, come on.

– Alex Tuch will not be traded.
