It’s been official for several months now. Ben Affleck is no longer Batman, aka Bruce Wayne, following the revamp of the defunct DC Extended Universe. The DC universe now in the hands of Peter Safran and James Gunn is looking for its new Dark Knight. An actor who will be in the news in March 2024 would like to play the vigilante. Christopher Nolan told him “NO” almost two decades ago.

From club goalkeeper to Gotham vigilante

Jake Gyllenhaal is one of the talented actors who has established himself in Hollywood with just a few films. Donnie Darko, directed in 2001 by Richard Kelly, focused all the attention on him. Since then he has had a series of projects, all very different from each other, and has built a solid career. Between Michael Bay’s action film Ambulance, the Spider-Man movie with Tom Holland and the intimate thriller The Guilty, he moves from one shoot to the next with disconcerting ease.

In 2024, the American-born actor puts on a club’s colorful goalkeeper jersey and faces a UFC star. Jake Gyllenhaal takes on martial artist Conor McGregor in Road House directed by Doug Liman (Edge of Tomorrow, Skin Memory, Barry Seal: American Traffic, etc.). The actor demonstrates an astonishing ability to fictionally take on an MMA champion and appear credible in this film, streaming exclusively on Amazon Prime Video. Our colleagues from On-screen rant I even imagined him as Batman. Here is his response:

Oh my God. It is a classic. It is an honor. Speaking of playing roles that other incredible actors have played in the past, for me, actually, when I think about it, I’m going to play Iago in Othello with Denzel Washington. And I think about the history of the actors who have played this role over time, and it amazes me. So this is the first step. This is what I’m working on right now. Well of course. It would always be an honor. These roles are classic. -Jake Gyllenhaal

A rejection of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy

20 years ago, Jake Gyllenhaal was approached to play Bruce Wayne in the upcoming Dark Knight trilogy. The History of the Seventh Art finally agrees with Christian Bale, the favorite for the role and will face Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow), Heath Ledger (Joker) and Tom Hardy (Bane). Christopher Nolan made a decision in 2005. James Gunn could make the opposite decision in 2024 by entrusting the Dark Knight costume to Jake Gyllenhaal in the next DCU “Batman” movie. Directed by Andy Muschietti (The Flash), The Brave and The Bold will be screened in theaters at a date yet to be determined and will focus on the relationship between Bruce Wayne and his son Damian.
