When Zack Snyder wanted to fix Star Wars

If you like science fiction, Zack Snyder or just what’s on Netflix in general, you couldn’t miss the premiere of Rebel Moon: Part 1 – Child of Fire. Available on Netflix on December 15, 2023. This new film from the famous director of 300, Man of Steel and Batman v Superman aimed to crush Star Wars and establish itself as a new classic of the genre. It must be said that it was originally supposed to be part of the George Lucas saga since this project was born from a proposal from Snyder to Kathleen Kennedy, the producer at the head of Lucasfilm. It was then going to be a feature film focusing on the Jedi and was released before Disney bought the license.

A few days ago, Zack Snyder had the opportunity to speak on The Director’s Cut podcast dedicated to Hollywood directors. He then took the opportunity to reveal some still unknown elements about the genesis of Rebel Moon and, in particular, when it was going to be part of the Star Wars universe. During this podcast, Snyder revealed in particular that he would have wanted his film to “repair” the mistakes made by Star Wars and, in particular, its Prelogy:

We were working on Man of Steel at the time. I said to Christopher Nolan, “I have an idea. I’m going to call Kathleen Kennedy and pitch her this idea I have for the Star Wars movie.” At the time, it was before the Disney acquisition and after the new trilogy, Star Wars was in silent mode. And I remember thinking, “They need me! That’s great, I’m going to fix Star Wars!” I had some problems with the decisions made for the prelogy. I’m not going to tell you too much, but I had the impression that Lucasfilm had strayed a little from the right path. I know it’s sacrilege to say that, but that’s how I felt.

A first film that struggles to convince

Unfortunately for Zack Snyder, the project he then proposed to Kathleen Kennedy never came to fruition and he was therefore unable to attempt to fix Star Wars as he would have liked. It must be said that he intended to take advantage of the opportunity to make a “Rated R” feature film, aimed more at a mature audience and prohibited for those under 17 years of age without support in the United States. A vision of things that does not entirely coincide with Star Wars, even before its acquisition by Disney. After this refusal, he continued working on his film that eventually became Rebel Moon, produced by Netflix. Bet won by Snyder? When you look at the score for Rebel Moon: Part 1 – Child of Fire on Rotten Tomatoes, you could easily think no.

With an overall score of 23% for the press and 58% for viewers, the first part of Rebel Moon can easily be classified as a failure. The public generally criticizes it for an excess of almost everything, which makes its viewing indigestible and too close to what we already know. Note also that Rebel Moon should benefit from an “R Rated” uncensored version that should arrive this summer. Before that, The second part of the story is also expected on Netflix on April 19, 2024. Maybe all this will convince a few more people when the work is done.
