After the death last Thursday in London of the American actor David Soul, it was his role as an actor in the television series “Starsky and Hutch” that was praised, but it is the singer who was brought in by producer Alain Marie (66 years old). Bienne and the Jura arch, at the end of the 90s.

“One Friday, while I was living in Bienne, I picked up the phone and heard “Hello? It’s David Soul.” “I thought it was a joke!” says Alain Marie, who now lives in Pieterlen (Perles), near Bienne.

It was a customer at the “Mustang” nightclub in Crémines who established contact between the two men, through Hutch’s French fan club, in 1996.

Gala at the “Mustang”

The Parisian photographer Alain Marie was then the businessman of French singers such as C Jérôme. With this cap, he had taken Alain Turban to the “Mustang” for a gala, since Bienne had become his home port and his aunts were based there.

“Would you be interested in doing something with me?” David Soul asks him. The two men meet in La Chaux-de-Fonds, during a gala with Dave, Patrick Juvet, Hélène and the boys…

“No, I’m David”

“When they saw him, people said, ‘Look, there’s Starsky and Hutch,’ as if that were his name,” Alain Marie smiles. “No, I’m David,” David Soul replied. “Some sang the theme song of the movie. series, but David did not know the music of the French version,” reports the producer of Bienne.

Invited to perform at the Cannes festival on the occasion of Charles Aznavour’s birthday, of which he was making adaptations, David Soul and his musicians settled in the “Cheval-Blanc” hotel in Moutier, to rehearse with a musician from Tavannes and in the former “Club 138” by Courrendlin, where they performed as well as at Moutier’s “Help” and at the “Montreux Jazz Festival”.

“Leave a light on”

“What if we made an album?” David Soul once said to Alain Marie. The recording made in Paris cost a quarter of a million francs and had limited success. “It was melodious jazz, varied music,” explains the producer.

“After many divorces, I no longer had any money,” recalls Alain Marie. Explanation: “I didn’t imagine the international career of the “Starsky and Hutch” series. That’s why she preferred to be paid for filming than for broadcasting…”.

Blonde next to brown

After becoming world famous as Inspector Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson, the blonde alongside the brunette played by Paul Michael Glaser, David Soul filmed in the 1970s no less than 92 episodes of “Starsky and Hutch” broadcast in the United States. -United from 1975 to 1979 and in France in TF1 from 1978 to 1984.

the cleaning lady

The businessman remembers David Soul with an open heart: “He loved little people. I remember that at the Cheval-Blanc he chatted with both the cleaning lady and the cook.”
