The British newspaper reports this clarification of the protocol at a time when the king and Princess Catherine are in forced isolation due to health problems, as is Crown Prince William, at his wife’s bedside after her operation.

A state councilor is a member of the royal family to whom the monarch can delegate certain functions in the event of illness or travel abroad.

But the issue was put on the table when Charles III ascended to the throne in 2022, because three of these members were no longer active within the monarchy.

Prince Harry, youngest son of King Charles III, and his wife Meghan decided to retire from the royal family in 2020 and settle in the United States.

As for Prince Andrew, he is withdrawing from the monarchy due to his ties to the late American financier Jeffrey Epstein and accusations of sexual assault settled through a financial settlement.

To clarify the situation, the royal family clarified, within the framework of a law adopted by the British Parliament in November 2022, that “only its active members” could “in practice” act as state advisers, even if non-members Active members retain this title.

The law adopted at the end of 2022 indicates that Charles III decided to grant the role of “state councilor” to his sister, Princess Anne, and his brother Edward.

Buckingham Palace, however, made it clear that the king will not need to call in his state advisers to fill in for him next week, when he will undergo surgery for benign prostatic hypertrophy.
