Did you know that Tolkien, the author of The Lord of the Rings, had a big problem with Disney? For him, the director should even have gone to prison.

If you have a Disney+ subscription, you may have already stumbled upon the movie tolkien. This feature film covers the youth of the famous author, long before he began writing The Lord of the Rings and created the entire universe of Middle Earth. The young man doesn’t know it yet, but he is about to shake up decades of literature and fantasy. If Dome Karukoski’s film had quite positive reviews, it is a shame to find it today on Disney’s SVOD service, because Tolkien always hated Disney and did not hesitate to point it out.

The dwarves will be seen again for Tolkien

There is more in common between The Lord of the Rings and Disney than you think. For the record, Tolkien’s book was published in 1937, just a few months before the company’s first feature film, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. In both works we find a group of small characters. Also at a film screening the novelist discovered the dwarves and was shocked.

According to him, the treatment reserved for the characters of Grumpy, Professor or Simplet is exactly the opposite of the image that had been formed of these folkloric beings. He cannot bear that these creatures, whom he described as strong and resourceful, are reduced to being “bloated, drunk,” with “low-comedy faces”; as we see in the book dedicated to his life, JRR Tolkien’s Companion and Guide. He was even more vehement : “Dwarves had to be ugly, of course, but not in this way. And his jazz night was pretty bad. “I guess poor idiot Walt Disney never considered giving them another style of music.”he explains, referring to the songs from the feature film.

At this point we can almost talk about a division between Disney and Tolkien. The first, intellectualizes his dwarves by offering them culture, music, wars, victories and, above all, a dialect. Disney has another vision of things: the Seven Dwarfs are above all a representation of simple entertainment accessible to everyone. Thus, starting with Snow White, Tolkien has never been able to support the works of the long-eared firm, which he has not improved over time. All the feature films displeased the novelist because they were too bland compared to his original stories. In Peter Pan, for example, the fairy is supposed to be alcoholic and jealous to the point of wanting to kill Wendy, which was erased in favor of the Tinkerbell that everyone knows. In one of his letters, Tolkien even goes so far as to describe Walt as “a trickster eager to defraud (…) by tricks legal enough to keep him out of prison.”
